The Living and the Dead is a profoundly disturbing psychological horror film released in 2006. Seriously ill Nancy Brocklebank (Kate Fahy) requires expensive medical treatments that her husband Donald (Roger Lloyd-Pack) can no longer afford. When he travels to London in search of more lucrative employment, he leaves Nancy home in the care of a nurse (Sarah Ball). Also living at home is the Brocklebank's adult son, James (Leo Bill), who has a severe mental illness. As soon as Donald leaves, James locks the nurse out of the house and attempts to care for his mother alone. James' genuine concern for his mother is unfortunately manifested in a series of increasingly draconian home "remedies" that he believes will restore her health. As Nancy's health worsens, James becomes more panicked and delusional. His mother's only hope for survival rests with her nurse, who must regain entry into the home and subdue James before his schizophrenia costs Nancy her life.
