The Long Voyage Home is a 1940 drama film that follows the story of the crew aboard the SS Glencaim, a British cargo ship carrying explosives. The ship is on a voyage from the West Indies to Baltimore and then England. The crew includes Swedish ex-farmer Ole Olsen (John Wayne), brooding Englishman Smitty (Ian Hunter), middle-aged Irishman Driscoll (Thomas Mitchell), and the vindictive steward Cocky (Barry Fitzgerald). When rough seas begin to occur, the crew begins to get nervous. To add to their trepidation, Smitty's secretiveness makes the crew believe he may be a German spy. It turns out this is false and when the ship is near a port, a German plane attacks it, causing chaos. Unsure of what to do next, the ship's crew decides to go ashore. Together, they help each other solve their problems and begin to bond. An unexpected turn of events tests the loyalty the crew members have for each other.
