In the film, Jim Douglas (Dean Jones) is a professional race car driver who has resorted to participating in local demolition derbys to earn money. He lives in an old fire station with his best friend, Tennessee Steinmeiz (Buddy Hackett). Tennessee is an old hippy who believes everything has a spirit. Jim decides he wants to participate in an upcoming race and heads to town to find a cheap car. His quest leads him to meet a beautiful car salesperson, Carol Bennett (Michele Lee). When Jim's mission doesn't go quite as planned, he ends up with a 1963 pearly Volkswagon racing Beetle that he must make monthly payments on. Despite being unhappy with his choice, Jim prepares to participate in the race, but the car has another plan.
