The Love Letter is a 1999 film based on Cathleen Schine's novel by the same name and directed by Peter-Ho-Sun Chan. The story revolves around the main character, Helen (Kate Capshaw), a middle-aged single mother who runs a small bookshop in the town of Loblolly By The Sea. This small fishing community is one of those towns where everyone knows everyone's business. Helen's good friend George (Tom Selleck) has been in love with her since they went to school together, but he was never able to tell her. After years of waiting with no results, George gives up on Helen and marries another woman. Johnny (Tom Everett Scott) also likes Helen but he is not afraid to tell her and she does not seem to be bothered by the fact that he is almost half her age. Johnny also likes another girl named Jennifer (Julianna Nicholson), who just happens to work at Helen's bookstore. One day after returning from one of her long runs, Helen finds a love letter between the cushions of the couch. The letter is not addressed to anyone nor is it signed but the words are beautiful and definitely detail someone's love for another. The problem is finding out who wrote the letter and whom did they write it for. This story takes hilarious twist as this closely intertwined group of people tries to determine who wrote the letter.moreless
