Lovers of the Arctic Circle is a Spanish film released in 1998. It was written and directed by acclaimed director Julio Medem. In the film, eight year-old Otto (Peru Medem) and Ana (Sara Valiente) meet one day at school. They instantly realize that they appear to have a special connection with each other. Their relationship deepens when Ana's father later dies and her mother marries Otto's father, making the two children step-siblings. The story then jumps forward almost twenty years. Otto has moved to the Arctic Circle, where he flies planes back and forth to Spain. When Ana's life begins to fall apart, she moves to be close to Otto and the two renew their old relationship. In short order, the two of them fall deeply in love and become involved with each other, despite being step-brother and step-sister. Lovers of the Arctic Circle asks deep questions about the nature of love and existence, and how tragedy can influence our perception of the world.moreless
