The Machinist is a 2004 Spanish and American thriller directed by Brad Anderson and starring Christian Bale, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Aitana Sachez-Gijon. Bale plays Trevor Reznik, a factory worker who suffers from chronic insomnia. His lack of sleep makes him lose an unhealthy amount of weight, giving him a ghostlike appearance. Many at the factory are frightened of his erratic behavior, and when a coworker loses an arm when Trevor is distracted, he loses the few friends he had at the factory. Trevor takes solace in Stevie (Leigh), a local prostitute who genuinely cares for the emaciated factory worker. At the factory, however, Trevor becomes increasingly suspicious of Ivan, a fellow worker that no one else talks to. Repressed memories haunt Trevor, and soon he discovers that there is a strong connection between his tormented past and the existence of Ivan. To portray Trevor Reznik, Bale lost over 60 pounds in less than four months. The Machinist was well received by critics.moreless

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Not quite stunning enough to live up to a boldly bleak and unrelenting buildup.

    Variety Todd McCarthy

An intense, precision-controlled psychological mystery built around a very creepy lead performance by Christian Bale.

May be an expertly manipulated exercise in psychological horror, but that's all it is. Don't look for the kind of metaphoric weight you'd find in a movie by David Lynch or David Fi...
