The Magician (Ansiktet) is a 1958 film created by perennial filmmaker Ingrid Bergman (The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Fanny and Alexander). The film juxtaposes two mutually exclusive schools of thought - that is, reason versus faith. Albert Vogler (Max von Sydow) is a traveling musician, a master of illusions. He is expected to demonstrate supernatural stunts during his next performance, however, several skeptical science-minded spectators demand a preview of his act before it is displayed for all to see. The scientists attempt to catch Vogler in a lie, but soon realize that accomplishing this will be harder than imagined. The film also includes performances by Ingrid Thulin, Naima Wifstrand, Bibi Andersson, and Lars Ekborg. If you are new to Bergman, The Magician is an excellent film to start with as it is a great representation of his artistic style and capabilities. A definite must see for all those interested in great film.
