The Magus is a 1968 British psychological film that follows the story of a 25-year old English teacher, Nicholas Urfe (Michael Caine), who arrives on the Greek island of Phraxos for a vacant teaching position in an exclusive boys school. As he wanders around the beautiful and peaceful island, he is invited by Maurice Conchis (Anthony Quinn), a reclusive man who owns a large estate on the opposite site of the island and lives with his lovely wife, Lily (Candice Bergen), to spend a weekend at his mansion. Nicholas is drawn by the mysterious personality of Maurice, whom he finds to be a very intelligent man. He is intrigued how Maurice is able to manipulate the lives of the people around him. His curiosity about Maurice only leads him to get caught up in one of Maurice's dangerous psychological games. Unaware that his mind is already being controlled, Nicholas must find a way to get out of this psychological dilemma that threatens to change the course of his life forever. The Magus, also known as the "God Game" in the UK, is directed by Guy Green, and won a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography.moreless
