The Mambo Kings was produced in 1992. Starring Antonio Banderas and Armand Assante, this drama flick is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love" by Oscar Hijuelos. Set in 1950s Cuba, the story follows brother musicians Cesar (played by Assante) and Nestor (portrayed by Banderas) Castillo as they flee their native Havana and eventually land in New York City, where they work tedious jobs and attempt to live their dream of being mambo stars. Fate grants the struggling brothers an opportunity to guest star on an episode of "I Love Lucy," and they become overnight sensations. Cesar and Nestor do not share similar ambitions, however, and their stardom quickly fades. Their journey, fraught with successes and failures, passion and heartache, loves gained and lost, culminates in a shocking and tragic event that no one could have predicted -- and one of the mambo kings discovers that his move from Havana to New York was only the beginning.moreless
