The Man of My Life is a 2006 drama about the unique friendship between Hugo (Charles Berling) and Frederic (Bernard Campan). Frederic is a family man, spending the summer in the beautiful French countryside. Along with his lovely wife, Frederique (Lea Drucker), the two plan to spend a relaxing summer surrounded by friends and family, enjoying life without too many obligations. Their plans change when a single man moves in next door. Frederic, curious about the man without a wife or children, invites Hugo over. Frederic and Hugo become friends almost instantly. After revealing his homosexuality, Hugo is no longer welcomed by his own family and enjoys the connection and support of the couple next door. Frederic and Hugo start running together and spend evenings talking about life, the universe, love and their separate plans for the future. Frederic begins to realize that Hugo is uncovering long-buried emotions about Frederic's happiness and his choice to be a family man. The two men start to change their worldviews during their summer friendship.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 75

    TV Guide Maitland McDonagh

If the film ultimately amounts to little more than a middle-aged coming-of-age story, it's richly imagined and filled fanciful touches in keeping with its passionate subject.

  • 50

The New York Times Stephen Holden

The Man of My Life is a sumptuously illustrated but shallow fable of the grass-is-greener conflict between freedom and commitment.

  • 50

    Variety David Rooney

A drama that steadily succumbs to self-conscious artiness, drunk on its own sense of contrived poetry and cloudy existential reflection.
