The Man They Could Not Hang is a 1939 science-fiction crime horror film directed by Nick Grindle. In the film, Dr. Henryk Savaard (Boris Karloff) is a mad scientist who thinks he has discovered a way to return life to dead bodies. Dr. Savaard, who is obsessed with his work, convinces a medical student to volunteer for a dangerous experiment. Meanwhile, the police are aware of Dr. Savaard's obsession and vow to stop him before anyone gets hurt. Unfortunately for the volunteer, Dr. Savaard's experiment is interrupted by the police with devastating consequences for the volunteer. As a result of his past crimes and current experiment failure, Dr. Savaard is sentenced to death by Judge Bowman (Charles Townbridge). If the execution goes on as planned, Dr. Savaard's assistant plans to try to retrieve his body in hopes of reviving him, so the mad scientist can punish those who worked against him.
