The Mandrake Root is adapted from Niccolo Machiavelli's hit renaissance comedy of 1518, La Mandragola. shot on location in Italy it is directed by award winning theatre director Malachi Bogdanov, this hilarious tale of cunning and desire shows another side of Machiavelli, the infamous writer of the political handbook The Prince. Set in renaissance Italy, the action takes place over a span of 24 hours. With each character believing he is shrewder than the next, the comedy's main theme is the use of fraud. The story tells of Callimaco, a young Sardinian who returns from studying in Paris and is overcome by the beauty of Lucrezia, the virtuous and beautiful wife of the rich and foolish lawyer Nicia. In his desire to bed her, he engages the services of a fixer Liguro who knows that Nicia and Lucrezia are desperate for a child. With the help of a corrupt Priest and Lucrezia's mother, a woman of dubious morals, Callimaco convinces Nicia that the surest way for his wife to conceive is by taking a potion made from the Mandrake Root, with the dire warning that the first man to sleep with her will die within 8 days....moreless
