The Mark of Zorro brings the legend of the dashing masked outlaw to film in the first adaptation of Johnston McCulley's character. Zorro (Douglas Fairbanks) is the secret identity of Spanish nobleman Don Diego Vega in the old Spanish California. Zorro fights against the oppressive colonial government and emerges a champion of the people while evildoers who cross his path are forever marked with a Z-shaped cut. Among his enemies are Governor Alvarado (George Periolat), Captain Jaun Ramon (Robert McKim), and Sgt. Pedro Gonzales (Noah Beery). Zorro also courts the beautiful Lolita Pulido (Marguerite De La Motte), but when his fair maiden and her family are jailed, Don Diego must decide if he will throw off his mask to save her. The film is based on McCulley's 1919 story "The Curse of Capistrand". The 1920 silent film was the first of Hollywood's swashbuckling adventure films and led to Fairbanks' casting in several adventure roles.
