The Mean Season, directed by Phillip Borsos, is a 1985 crime thriller based on the novel "In the Heat of the Night" by John Katzenbach. In the film, Malcolm Anderson (Kurt Russell) is a veteran crime reporter in Miami. The daily grind of covering the city's murders is taking a terrible toll on Malcolm and his girlfriend, Christine Connelly (Mariel Hemmingway). Christine is pressuring Malcolm to give up his life and move to Colorado with her. Then Malcolm gets a call to report on the murder of two teenagers found dead on the beach. After reaching the beach and seeing yet another murder, Malcolm has decided to retire. Before he turns in his resignation, he receives a cryptic phone call from a serial killer known as the "Numbers Killer." The psychopathic serial killer wants to use Malcolm to tell the world about his story. As the relationship between the reporter and the killer progresses, it becomes unclear who benefits the most from the relationship.moreless
