The Memory of a Killer is a taut Belgian crime thriller based on the novel by Jef Geeraert, directed by Eric van Looy and released in 2003. Crackerjack detectives Vincke (Koen De Bouw) and Verstuyft (Werner De Smedt) can solve almost any crime. When the duo takes on a complex case involving two dead prostitutes and a missing politician, they're led to notorious but semi-retired assassin Angelo Ledda (Jan Decleir). The aging hitman is suffering from the first stages of dementia, and can no longer reliably complete jobs. In his twilight years, Ledda has also developed a more conservative ethical code; it's this code that makes him reject a contract to murder a schoolgirl. Now Ledda has a hefty price on his head and must elude the police and his former bosses any way that he can. This beautifully photographed, highly atmospheric film will satisfy viewers with an interest in complex thrillers and Belgian cinema.
