The Merchant of Four Seasons is a West German film from 1971 that was written and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. It stars Hans Hirschmueller and Irm Hermann. The film follows the life of a man who becomes a fruit peddler living in 1950s West Germany who is pushed over the edge by the uncaring society. The film focuses on issues such as class prejudice, domestic violence, infidelity, depression, family discord, self destruction and depression. Hans, a former soldier, returns home from the Foreign Service. He hopes to capitalize on the recent economic boom of Germany. He becomes a policeman. However after getting caught with a hooker he loses his police job and has to become a fruit peddler. This causes much dismay within his middle class family and his mistress who is trying to rise in the class ranks. The film was a huge success for Fassbinder and a turning point towards him gaining international acclaim as a director. Still today it is considered one of Fassbinder's best films.moreless
