The Monkey's Mask is a 2000 thriller directed by Samantha Lang. The film follows private detective Jill Fitzpatrick (Susie Porter), as she investigates the disappearance of Mickey (Abbie Cornish), a young university student and poet. As she begins her investigation, Fitzpatrick tracks down Mickey's professor, Diana Maitland (Kelly McGillis) at the university. The attraction is immediate. Fitzpatrick invites the married Maitland for coffee. Soon the two are involved in a torrid lesbian love affair. As Fitzpatrick continues her investigation, Maitland introduces her to to Mickey's former sex partners, Bill (Jim Holt) and Tony (Jean-Pierre Mignon). Neither want to talk to Fitzpatrick, so she is forced to learn about them though Mickey's poetry. Fitzpatrick uncovers a web of degradation and filth that Maitland calls "victim poetry." Soon after, Maitland chokes Fitzpatrick during sex to the point of asphyxiation. Delving deeper into Mickey's past, Fitzpatrick becomes increasingly entangled in Maitland's life, meeting, and eventually having sex with her husband. Now, locked in a love triangle, Fitzpatrick finds out what really happened to Mickey.moreless
