The Motorcycle Diaries is the critically acclaimed 2004 adventure biopic from director Walter Salles. The film centers around future Marxist revolutionary hero Ernesto Guevara (Gael Garcia Bernal, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Bad Education, Dot the I), 23 and only one session short of completing his medical degree. He and friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna), a biochemist almost 30, decide to explore their continent, on a 5000 mile journey on a 1939 Norton 500 that already was not in very good shape. They want to see for themselves what they have only studied in books. They have little money, and instead rely on their charm, plus some odd labor along the way, to get them from Argentina, through Chile, Peru, and Colombia to Venezulela. The narration, based on Guevara's observations in his diaries and his letters home during the time that he was away, gives the film a poetic tone that contrasts sharply with the earthy screenplay of Jose Rivera.moreless
