The Music Man is the 1962 classic musical film based on the hit Broadway musical of the same name by Meredith Wilson. In July 1912, traveling salesman Harold Hill (Robert Preston) comes to River City, Iowa in hopes of swindling the Iowans out of their money. He aims to convince the townsfolk that he will start a boys marching band, but he first will need their money for instruments, uniforms, and music instruction. When the town becomes distrustful of him, Hill works his magic by seducing Marian (Shirley Jones), the town's library and piano teacher. Marian only falls for Hill after her mother and brother Winthrop (Ron Howard) convince her of his merits. When a fellow traveling salesman comes to town and exposes Hill as a fraud, Hill attempts to leave town, but realizes he can't due to his love for Marian. An angry mob then catches Hill and brings him to a town meeting in hopes of tar and feathering him. Luckily, the boys band as learned to play their instruments (of no thanks to Hill), and the town is then convinced that he should stay. Directed by Morton DaCosta, The Music Man was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.moreless
