The Naked Spur is a 1953 American Western film directed by Anthony Mann. The film is focused on bounty hunter Howard Kemp (James Stewart), prospector Jesse Tate (Millard Mitchell), soldier, Roy Anderson (Ralph Meeker), and wanted criminal, Ben Vandergroat (Robert Ryan). Kemp is an experienced bounty hunter who begins his hunt for the murderous Vandergroat in the opening scenes of The Naked Spur. He meets Jesse Tate along the way, and offers to pay the prospector twenty dollars in exchange for his help in finding the criminal. Tate agrees and they continue on Vandergroat's trail. They find a man, who they suspect of being Vandergroat, but find out that he is actually a discharged Union soldier named Roy Anderson. Anderson reveals that he is hiding from some Indians that he angered, and happily accepts an invitation to join them. They quickly catch up with Vandergroat and his companion, Lina Patch (Janet Leigh), but Kemp discovers that there may be more to the accused criminal than he has been told.moreless
