The Natural is about a baseball player's rise, fall, and surprising comeback. In 1923, Roy Hobbs is a gifted 19-year-old athlete who plays with a lucky bat, carved with a lightning bolt, that he made himself as a boy. On his way to a tryout with the Chicago Cubs, he meets Harriet Byrd, a disturbed woman who seduces him. Harriet takes Roy to her hotel room, where she shoots Roy and then commits suicide. Roy is able to build a career for himself, but only in the minor leagues, until in 1939 he signs a contract with the struggling New York Knights. The Knights' manager, Pop Fisher, does not think much of Roy, who is older than the other rookies. When Roy proves that he is a skillful player, he wins the approval of Pop and the affections of Pop's niece, Memo Paris. His affair with Memo begins to distract him from the game until he reconnects with his childhood sweetheart, Iris Gaines, and learns a startling secret about her past.
