The New Centurions is a 1972 crime drama based on a novel by former policeman Joseph Wambaugh. The film chronicles the lives of three rookie cops who join the Los Angeles police department at the same time. Roy Fehler (Stacy Keach), Gus Plebesly (Scott Wilson) and Sergio Duran (Erik Estrada) team up with veteran officers Andy Kilvinski (George C. Scott) and Whitey (Clifton James) to battle crime in the city. When Gus and Whitey respond to a burglary call, their response challenges their moral and ethical beliefs. Whitey helps him cover up the crime. Roy gets so obsessed with police work that his wife and daughter leave him. Roy slips into depression and starts drinking, putting his life and the lives of those he loves in danger. Andy retires from the police force but is unable to deal with the lack of outside interests. As the new officers become old hands, they fight to master their fears and maintain links to the outside world. This hard look at the life of a Los Angeles police officer takes you past the excitement and into the darker side of one of Americas most difficult jobs.
