The Night Porter is a 1974 Italian film starring Dick Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling in a story about a man and woman who developed a bizarre relationship in a concentration camp during World War II and who meet again years later, allowing their strange blend of passion and hate to find some closure. Bogarde plays Maximillian Theo Aldorfer. During the war, he was a Nazi SS officer at a brutal concentration camp responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent victims. Rampling plays Lucia Atherton, who survived her time as a prisoner at Maximillian's camp. Years after the war, Lucia encounters Maximillian again, as he now works as a night porter at a hotel in Vienna. Despite their apparent role reversal, they quickly return to the sadomasochistic relationship they developed during the war. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn that while Max did not shy away from tormenting and hurting Lucia, he's also largely responsible for her surviving the camp. The Night Porter is a controversial relationship story from writer/director Liliana Cavani.moreless
