The October Man is a 1947 mystery film based on a novel by Eric Ambler. It is the story of Jim Ackland (John Mills), a man who suffers a serious brain injury in a bus accident that also kills a young girl under his care. Following the accident, Jim takes a job as a chemist in a new town where he doesn't know anyone to make a fresh start. When Molly Newman (Kay Walsh), a woman who lives in the same hotel as Jim, is found strangled one night in the town common, Jim becomes the prime suspect through a series of coincidences and misunderstandings. Unable to provide an alibi and desperate to prove his innocence to Police Inspector Godby (Frederick Piper), Jim goes on a quest to clear his name even though the lingering effects of his brain injury make him question whether he is sure of his own innocence.
