The Official Story is a 1985 drama from Argentina that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. High school teacher Alicia (Norma Aleandro) enjoys a comfortable life with her husband, Roberto (H''ctor Alterio), and adopted daughter, Gaby (Analia Castro). When teaching a class on recent history, her students begin to mock Alicia for only teaching an inaccurate version of recent events, the "official story" from the military dictatorship. Alicia also notices protests in the town plaza by families demanding information on missing children, taken from "subversives" during the totalitarian regime. She then receives a visit from an old friend, Ana (Chunchuna Villafane). Ana explains her long absence with the revelation that she has been in prison, and describes horrible torture and stories of families torn apart. Alicia begins to wonder about her own 5-year old daughter's biological family, but Roberto's unsatisfying and evasive answers lead her to research the question on her own.
