The One That Got Away is the 1957 war film directed by Roy Ward Baker which tells the story of a pilot who is shot down and captured. Based on the 1956 book of the same name by Kendal Burt and James Leasor, the film tells the true story of Obverleutnant Franz von Werra (Hardy Kruger). Franz was a luftwaffe pilot who was shot down over England in 1940. Shot down during the Battle of Britain, we join Franz as he is captured and sent to a POW camp in Cumbria. The cocky Franz bets the camp's interrogator that he can escape within six months, and starts planning a daring getaway. He successfully escapes but is recaptured and sent to a more secure camp, escaping that camp too. Finally he is sent to Canada, but will he ever be successful in his escape? Hardy Kruger is joined by cast members including Michael Goodliffe, Alex McCowen, Terence Alexander and Jack Gwillim in this well-crafted war drama.moreless
