Movie Summary

Director:
James Wong
Released:
2001
Rating:
PG-13
The One is an action film that stars Jet Li. Jet Li plays the character of Gabriel Yulaw, a police officer who meets an alternate universe version of himself and must fight him. Gabriel is walking around the city one night when he comes across a person that looks exactly like him. He quickly figures out that this person is actually him, but he came from a parallel universe and has intentions of killing Gabriel. He must fight the man in an epic battle that lasts for days. Soon the battle turns into a fight between good and evil, that gives Gabriel a brand new perception of reality and makes him look inside of himself to find the evil within. This movie is a fantastic portrayal of the fight between good and evil, along with having action packed scenes of martial arts fighting that will keep you riveted throughout the whole movie.

Metacritic Score

  • 30

The New York Times Stephen Holden

So narratively garbled and its screenplay so underwritten that you have to strain to piece together the story.

  • 30

    Los Angeles Times Jan Stuart

Li's far too unthreatening a presence to cause much of a stir amid the din of hard rock music and the pall left by fight choreography that has had every last bit of life digitally ...

  • 0

    Variety Robert Koehler

The combo of cheesy effects and martial arts choreographer Cory Yuen's unimaginative staging results in something that's martial artless.
