The Opponent is a drama film from 2000 directed by Eugene Jarecki. Patty (Erika Eleniak) is a woman in an abusive relationship who decides to learn to defend herself by taking up boxing. Fred (John Doman) and June (Aunjanue Ellis) are boxing match promoters who see Patty in action in the ring and think she has talent as a boxer. They believe that she could be a promising professional boxer and introduce her to Tommy (James Colby) a personal trainer from a nearby gym. Tommy helps Patty get into top shape as she agrees to try her hand at boxing professionally. This movie portrays Patty's climb up the ladder of the women's professional boxing circuit as she gains strength and self-esteem. Through boxing, Patty reclaims her life and gets her life on the right track as she faces the biggest fight of her life, the top championship match of the year.
