The Order is a 2003 supernatural thriller starring Oscar winner Heath Ledger as a young priest trying to solve the mystery of his mentor. When the head of the iconoclastic Carolingian order of the Catholic Church mysteriously dies with strange markings on his chest, his prot''g'' Alex Bernier (Heath Ledger) travels to Rome for help. Cardinal Driscoll (Peter Weller) informs Alex that he must kill a Sin Eater, a supernatural being that offers absolution outside of the Church. With the help of his old friend, Father Thomas (Mark Addy), and Mara Sinclair (Shannyn Sossamon), a young artist who Alex once helped to free of evil spirits, Alex pursues the arcane symbols of this hidden aspect of his religion. Eventually he finds the charming William Eden (Benno F''rmann), one of the Sin Eaters, and Alex must decide which side of the church he believes in. Writer and director Brian Helgeland ("A Knight's Tale") combines the mystical and spooky in this religious adventure.
