The Orphanage is a 2007 Spanish horror film directed by Juan Antonia Bayona. Kind-hearted Laura (Belen Rueda) wants to turn the abandoned orphanage where she lived as a young girl into a home for children with disabilities. She takes her husband Carlos (Fernando Cayo) and their adopted son Simon (Roger Princep) to the run-down orphanage so that they can repair it together. Almost as soon as the family arrives, Simon begins to play with an invisible, masked friend whom he calls Tomas (Oscar Casas). Although Laura is not concerned about Simon at first, she soon begins to suspect that something supernatural is occurring inside of the old building. When her son mysteriously disappears one night, Laura contacts a medium named Aurora (Geraldine Chaplin) to help her figure out where he has gone. While struggling to find out what happened to her lost son, Laura slowly uncovers a gruesome secret hidden within the orphanage.

  • GREAT MOVIE! Truly terrific but also extremely intense and unsettling!

    9.0
I rarely get scared at the movies.. since Kubrick's masterpiece "The Shining" this one truly did unsettle me and haunted me for weeks after! Incredibly emotional, twisted but never convoluted or "phoned in" like most US Horror/Thrillers, classy, just close to perfection! But an agony..
