The Other Side of Sunday (1996) is an Academy Award-nominated Norwegian dramatic comedy directed by Berit Nesheim. The film is based on a novel written by Reidun Nortvedt. Norway of the 1950s is the setting for this coming-of-age story. Maria (Marie Theisen) is the daughter of a conservative priest servicing a small, repressive, rural village. Maria struggles with her developing sexuality. Her raging hormones and barely-suppressed libido make her a target of ridicule by her peers. Confused and hurt, Maria retreats into isolation where she finds solace in reading literature and taking walks. It is on one of these walks where Maria meets Mrs. Tunheim (Hildegun Riise), the middle-aged church caretaker. A relationship blossoms between the two women as Mrs. Tunheim becomes a mentor for Maria's sexual awakening. Encouraged to live life to the fullest, Maria seeks to liberate herself from her community and father. However, breaking free from her strict upbringing proves difficult for Maria.
