The Palm Beach Story is a classic 1942 screwball comedy about a happily married couple that decides to divorce for profit. Gerry (Claudette Colbert) and Tom Jeffers (Joel McCrea) have been married for four years, but cannot pay the bills and have to give up their apartment. When a prospective renter, Wienie King (Robert Dudley), takes pity on Gerry's predicament and hands her a wad of money, she decides the best way to help Tom find funding for his dream airport is to divorce him. Although Tom tries to dissuade her, Gerry sneaks away and catches a train to Palm Beach. She happens to land in the berth next to millionaire John D. Hackensacker III (Rudy Vallee). After a mishap on the train leaves Gerry without her suitcase, John kindly buys her clothes and invites her to complete the trip on his yacht. Meanwhile, Tom who tracks Gerry down to the yacht dock, where he meets John's sister, Princess Centimillia (Mary Astor). While waiting for the landing, the Princess falls for Tom, so the romantic complications multiply when Gerry and John finally land.
