The Patriot is a historical war film directed by Roland Emmerich that centers on a legendary veteran and widower Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) as he helplessly tries to keep his family safe as the American Revolutionary War rips through his South Carolinian home. Having already experienced the bloody results of war, Benjamin tries to remain on the sidelines to care for his already motherless young children even as his eldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) views him a coward and joins the Continental Army. He's pulled into the battle when Gabriel's deemed a spy and the Green Dragoons, a brutal British mounted infantry, led by ruthless Colonel William Tavington (Jason Isaacs) destroy everything Benjamin has tried to keep safe. As he teaches the South Carolina militia, including the French Major Jean Villeneuve (Tcheky Karyo), unorthodox guerilla tactics in order to keep the British out, it becomes a cat and mouse game of survival as Tavington borders on brutality in order to find Benjamin while Benjamin seeks to avenge his son and his country's freedom from the British.
