The Payoff is a 1942 crime drama directed by Arthur Dreifuss. When special prosecutor Lloyd Pearson is found murdered, all of the evidence points to the gambler Moroni (John Maxwell). Snag is, he was spending the evening playing poker with smart mouthed reporter Brad McKay (Lee Tracy) at the time. Brad investigates the crime. Moroni, of course, is trying to convince Brad that Lloyd Pearson was on the take and was killed by his assistant Hugh Walker (Forrest Taylor), but it becomes clear fairly quickly that Moroni was involved in the crime. Then Moroni himself is found dead. Somebody hired Moroni to kill Pearson. Somebody who is behind both deaths, and possibly the abduction of Walker. Needless to say there is also a considerable amount of money involved, money hidden in Walker's locker. Brad retrieves it and goes after the real killer. Will he succeed or will he become the next victim?
