The People Under the Stairs is the 1991 cult horror hit from famed horror maestro Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes). Fool is an African American youth living in impoverished conditions in the Los Angeles ghetto when his family, including his cancer ridden mother and single parent sister, is threatened with immediate eviction by their monstrous landlord (Everett McGill). Left with no other option, he joins Leroy (Ving Rhames) in a plan to rob their landlord of a valuable coin collection that will save them from their situation. To this end the two, along with their robber friend Spencer, break in to the landlord's sinister mansion he shares with his cold wife (Wendy Robie). They soon discover they've bit off more than they can chew when the sinister secrets within the house begin to manifest themselves and Fool must soon survive and escape the clutches of the people under the stairs.moreless
