Juan wakes up from his dream in prison, where he is serving a 20 year sentence. Soon after his dream, he is released from prison. His goal is to go to Florida to find his wife, Carmela (Anjelica Huston) and his daughter. While on a boat to the U.S. with other refugees, Juan meets a prostitute named Dottie (Marisa Tomei). In order to increase their chances of getting an apartment, Juan and Dottie pretend to be a married couple. What ensues is a series of hilarious events, and viewers realize the meaning of Juan's dream.
