The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 musical directed by Rupert Julian. It is based on the 1910 French novel of the same name by Gaston Leroux. A deformed man known as the Phantom (Lon Chaney) resides in a subterranean home underneath the Paris Opera House. Although people fear him and his presence is legendary, he remains a shadowy figure that nobody ever sees. When young Christine Daae (Mary Philbin) comes to the opera house as a chorus girl, the Phantom takes a special interest in her. He gives her voice lessons, talking to her without showing his body, and she soon becomes the understudy to the main opera singer, Carlotta (Virginia Pearson). The Phantom sends a note demanding that Christine takes the lead role at the opera and threatening dire consequences if the managers do not listen. When the Phantom becomes jealous of Christine's lover Raoul (Norman Kerry) and angry that his demands are not being met, his intentions soon become murderous.moreless
