The Phantom of the Opera is the 1989 adaptation of the seminal Gaston Leroux novel, this time transposing the action of the novel from Paris to London and ingratiating an American into the cast. This film begins in present day New York City, where Christine Daae (Jill Schoelen, Popcorn) is auditioning for a major Broadway show, and has unearthed a lost aria by a mysterious composer to use as an audition piece. Things go terribly wrong during however, as a stage accident knocks her unconscious and whisks her away to 18th century London, where she finds herself as understudy in the London opera. There, she also finds herself under the tutelage and obsession of a disfigured composer who lives in the catacombs beneath the opera house, and wants both to elevate her to superstardom and make her his bride. But when negative incidents start to befall Christine, the Phantom (Robert Englund) takes his obsession too far and begins murdering in her name.moreless
