Movie Summary

The Philadelphia Story is a romantic comedy film directed by George Cukor based on the Broadway play of the same name that centers on the old money socialite Tracy Samantha Lord Haven (Katharine Hepburn), whose impending marriage to the new money George Kittrege (John Howard) is put in a bit of a bind when her ex-husband C.K. Dexter Haven comes roaring back into her life. Of course, Dexter does not come empty handed – he brings cynical tabloid reporter Macaulay "Mike" Connor (James Stewart) and his photographer Liz Imbrie (Ruth Hussey) to report on the family. Despite Tracy's obvious dislike of her ex-husband, the rest of her family welcome him back with open arms and she slowly becomes acquainted with the wit of Mike. It is a mismatch of could-be love affairs with Tracy placed in the center of the drama the day before her wedding! The Philadelphia Story is considered one of the top 100 movies in a number of American Film Institute lists and received a number of nominations and awards, including the win for the Academy Award for Best Actor for James Stewart.moreless
