The Pigeon that Took Rome is a war comedy about American soldiers Captain Paul MacDougall (Charlton Heston) and Sergeant Joseph Contini (Harry Guardino) behind Italian lines during the latter stages of World War II. The two are sent to Rome, which is occupied by the Nazis. Their mission is to act as spies and use carrier pigeons to relay messages to the Allies about the Nazi troop movements. They have no experience in the field of espionage. Together, they work with a resistance soldier named Ciccio Massimo (Salvatore Baccaloni). After some time, Contini falls in love with the resistance soldier's daughter Rosalba (Gabriella Pallotta). Her sister Antonella (Elsa Martinelli) is infatuated with MacDougall. Finally, Contini asks Rosalba to marry him. In the excitement that follows, Massimo prepares a celebration for his daughter's engagement and future marriage. He mistakenly kills all but one of the carrier pigeons for use in the feast. In an attempt to fix his error, he replaces them with German pigeons which take the messages right into the hands of the Nazis.moreless
