The Pistol: The Birth of a Legend is a 1991 drama about the early years of American basketball legend “Pistol” Pete Maravich, who set ten NCAA records during his college years that still stand today, and went on to break more records in the NBA until his retirement at age 32. This film focuses on the year 1959, when young Maravich was in eighth grade. He wasn't the tallest player on the team, or the fastest, or the strongest, but what the young man lacked physically he made up for in sheer devotion to the sport. Under the unflinching support of his father Press, who himself was a former professional basketball player, Pete spends hour after hour drilling the technical aspects of the game. While other kids his age focused on slam dunks and trick shots, Pete developed creative ways to open up simple shots that he could reliably hit. He'd spend hours in his back yard dribbling, trying out new ball control tricks and passing techniques. His hard work paid off early, and he earned the singular honor of making the varsity high school team when he was only in eighth grade. The Pistol: The Birth of a Legend details the formative years of one of the most successful basketball players of all time.moreless
