The Playboys is a 1992 Irish drama directed by Gillies MacKinnon. Set in a small Irish village in 1957, the film follows Tara Maguire (Robin Wright) as she fights to maintain her independence after having a baby out of wedlock. Despite unrelenting pressure from townspeople and the local priest, Tara refuses to name the father of her child. When two potential suitors, Constable Brendan Hegarty (Albert Finney) and Mick (Adrian Dunbar), ask for her hand in marriage, she spurns them both. While living with her sister Brigid (Naimh Cusack), Tara surprises a thief stealing a chicken from her yard. The thief turns out to be actor Tom Case (Aidan Quinn) who is traveling with a troupe known as "The Playboys." Tom slowly begins to win Tara's heart, but love is not enough as this small Irish village is torn apart by threats, lies, suicide and deception. Fans of character driven dramas and fine acting will find something to enjoy in The Playboys.
