The Poker House is the directorial debut from Lori Petty. Agnes (Jennifer Lawerence) is struggling to survive with her two sisters, Bee (Sophia Bairley) and Cammie (Chlo'' Grace Moretz), in a small town in Iowa in 1976. The story shows 24 hours in the life of Agnes and her family.Her mom is a drug addict and prostitute. Her house has become overrun by men who use the place for gambling, drinking and sex. The father figure in her life is a pimp (Bokeem Woodbine). Bee has a newspaper route and trades in glass bottles at the drug store to make ends meet. Still, Agnes tries to keep ahold of her childhood as she fullfills her duty as a surrogate mother. Agnes is a bookworm who involves herself in basketball and dreams of a better life. The Poker House is Lori Petty's personal story of growing up and coming of age. It also serves as a haunting portrait of growing up in poverty.moreless
