The Prince and the Pauper is a 2000 film based on the classic novel written by Mark Twain. The novel was adapted to film by Duke Fenady and Dominic Minghella. The story follows two young boys from England. Although their families and living conditions are very different, they are both dissatisfied with their lives at home and wish to run away. Tom Canty (Robert Timmins) lives with his abusive, alcoholic father John Canty (Ian Redford) in a shoddy neighborhood. Restricted to the four walls of his father's house, Tom often fantasies about trading his impoverished life for one full of riches and adventure. Meanwhile, Prince Edward Tudor (Jonathan Timmins) lives with his callous, nagging father, King Henry VIII (Alan Bates). He wishes he could trade his high maintenance, aristocratic life for one that is more normal. One day, Tom stumbles into King Henry's palace unnoticed and meets Prince Edward. They immediately form a bond and decide to trade places. But is the grass really greener on the other side?
