The Prince of Tides is a 1991 drama about two people from different backgrounds who form a relationship based on their unhappy experiences. Tom Wingo (Nick Nolte) is an unemployed football coach stuck in an unhappy and lifeless marriage. Though he is dealing with his own problems, he is forced to fly to New York to take care of his suicidal sister (Melinda Dillon). When in New York, he meets his sister's psychiatrist, Susan Lowenstein (Barbara Streisand), who begins to talk to Tom about his past in order to better help his sibling. Tom has a hard time revealing his past, but finally opens about a tortured childhood filled with abuse that has led to resentment and rage today. As Lowenstein hears about his constant unhappiness, she opens up about her own loveless marriage to her snobby husband (Jereon Krabbe). Through their loneliness, the two find a connection that transcends into a love affair.
