The Princess Diaries is a 2001 Disney family comedy, based on the best selling young adult's book of the same title by prolific chick-lit author Meg Cabot, starring Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway, Hector Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, Robert Schwartzman, and Erik von Detten. In the movie, Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) is an ordinary girl whose life completely changes when her prick of a grandmother (Julie Andrews) shows up with a big secret in tow: Mia is the crown princess of a small European country, Genovia! Between crushing on the cutest guy at school (Erik von Detten), dealing with the popular girl (Mandy Moore), and being best friends with an eccentric geek (Heather Matarazzo), life as a teenage girl is challenging enough. Throw a tiara into the equation and things get pretty crazy! The Princess Diaries opened to great commercial success, as well as great critical acclaim receiving nominations for many awards and winning several of them.
