The Private Affairs of Bel Ami (1947), based on Guy de Maupassant's acclaimed novel, was directed by Albert Lewin. The film traces the adventures of Georges Duroy, a once-penniless former soldier who does not hesitate to be a cad and a womanizer in the pursuit of a successful journalistic career in 19th-century Paris. Ever ambitious, Duroy finds love with a young widow, Clothilde, but ditches her to marry Madeleine, the widow of an old friend; he subsequently pursues other, increasingly rich and powerful, women and eventually finds himself in the legal position to appropriate the title of one of France's most noble houses - but here the scoundrel comes unstuck. Witty and devious, much like its appalling hero, this is one of the most unusual and stimulating Hollywood films of the 1940s.
