The Prize is a light-hearted mystery thriller involving crime, deception and Nobel Prize winners. Andrew Craig is a philandering, hard-drinking writer who unexpectedly wins the Nobel Prize for literature. Arriving in Stockholm, he meets a fellow laureate, Dr. Max Stratman, who is very friendly and very pro-American; but at a press conference later that week, Stratman largely ignores Craig, avoids the media, criticises the US savagely and exhibits an all-around change in character. Craig cannot convince anyone that the kindly doctor has been replaced by a doppelganger and that the real man has been kidnapped - so he investigates on his own.

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • This was a very loose adaptation of Irving Wallace's best-selling novel. As several critics noted, its plot bore a rather closer resemblance to that of Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 film North By Northwest - which had the same screenwriter, Ernest Lehman (and was the only screen original in Lehman's career).

    • QUOTES (2)

      • Count Bertil Jacobsson: Once more, man bestows immortality upon his fellow man. Ladies and gentlemen of the international press, I give you this year's winners of the Nobel Prize.

      • Andrew Craig: [threatened with death by Daranyi, who had previously posed as a waiter]: Oh, come on, Daranyi - just because I wouldn't eat one of your damned canapes...
