The Promise is a romantic drama set in Berlin shortly after the Berlin Wall has been built to separate east from west. Konrad (Anian Zollner and August Zirner) and Sophie (Meret Becker and Corinna Harfouch) plan a daring escape from East Berlin with three of their friends. All but Konrad are able to escape to freedom. Over the next 28 years, the two try time and time again to meet, but Konrad, an astrophysicist, is a valuable asset to the communist regime and under close supervision by the Stasi, the political police. They monitor the moves of all suspicious people and Konrad's attempts to meet with Sophie are all unsuccessful. While exploring the dedication and loyalty of two separated lovers, the film also explores the effect of the Berlin Wall on the residents of the city through the rise and fall of communism. The 1995 film is rated R for sexual situations and language. Meret Becker won the 1995 Bavarian Film Award for Best Actress and Margarethe von Trotta won for Best Direction.moreless
