Movie Summary

Director:
Anne Fletcher
Released:
2009
Rating:
PG-13

The Proposal shows audiences how telling a small lie can sometimes become a big problem. Anne Fletcher directs this romantic comedy that opens with Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) in trouble with immigration authorities after overstaying her visa. She is a successful business woman who refuses to go back to Canada. Margaret pressures her assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) into marrying her. He agrees to do it but only after she meets his family in Alaska. The couple arrives in Anchorage, and Margaret immediately realizes that Alaska is a not an easy place to live. Andrew's father Joe (Craig T. Nelson) and his mother Grace (Mary Steenburgen) don't approve of their son's fiance and try to complicate their relationship by asking her to do some difficult tasks. Grandma Annie (Betty White) says that she like Andrew's new fiance but always finds a way to humorously insult her. Viewers later find out if Andrew's marriage intentions are legitimate, or if he just wants some payback after years of abuse from his abusive boss.
